What to Pack in Hospital Bag for Baby?

The due date is approaching and it’s time to pack your hospital bags!
After your hospital bag has everything you need, it’s time to move on to what your newborn baby will wear for the first time.

Dressing a newborn shouldn’t be about fashion. It’s more about comfort, keeping them warm, and what type of natural fabric will be best on their sensitive skin. Not sure where to start, here are some ideas:

Newborn first outfit

The going home outfit is something special and fun to pick. Your baby will be already adorable, so fashion shouldn’t be your priority. Keeping them warm and cozy for the ride home should be the main concern.

As you will notice when holding your baby for the first time, their skin is more delicate than your own. A baby’s skin barrier is up to 30% thinner than adults.
Due to their thinner skin, babies are more susceptible to temperature change, so make sure to keep them cozy, warm, and fresh depending on the season.

Pack a long sleeve button-up footed onesie or layette set that includes long sleeve bodysuit, footed pants, and hat.

Hypoallergenic clothes made from 100% Pima Cotton are the best clothing for your newborn’s skin. Pima Cotton is ultra-soft, breathable that adjusts to body temperature, hypoallergenic, and free from chemicals. Using this type of sustainably-sourced cotton will protect your newborn baby’s skin from any allergic reaction o irritation.

At The Smiley Baby, we make packing easy for you by offering our curated Welcome Newborn Boxes with the essential outfits sets needed for your little one’s first days. Our clothing is made from 100% Peruvian Pima Cotton, the softest and finest fabric in the world.

Mittens, socks, and hats

Some moms may choose to cover their newborn’s hands to keep them warm or from scratching their faces with their sharp nails.
If you decide to add this into your baby’s bag, make sure to bring 2 pairs of mittens. It’s important to choose lightweight and natural fabric for moisture control. There are several options like pack sets of mittens or even bodysuits or footed onesies that have built-in mittens.

If not wearing footies, socks are helpful for newborns. Baby’s feet are often colder than ours so make sure to pack a few pairs.
Hats are one the best accessories for when in hospital. Make sure to pack 2 extra hats. The hospital will offer you hats but you want to make sure your little baby stays warm and cute.
